If you are like pretty much every other person in the world right now, you’ve probably made some goals for 2020. Goal-setting can have many names – resolutions, intentions, rhythms, mantras, etc. Whatever you choose to call them……are you actually ACHIEVING those goals? I’d be willing to bet that many of you (if not most) are great at making resolutions, but not at taking action. Research shows that 60 percent of people make New Year’s Resolutions, but only about 8 percent are successful at achieving them! Let’s get real ladies…..goals without hustle are just pipe dreams! That’s why I’m going to share with you the 5 simple actions I perform daily that will produce results and turn your resolutions into reality.
If you haven’t already written down goals for 2020, let’s take care of that first! If you want to drastically increase your rate of success in turning those goals into reality, you must write them down! There are significant changes that occur in your brain when you physically write goals down on paper. Plus, you cannot be successful at anything without clarifying what it is you want to achieve. Even if you have already decided what your goals are, I encourage you to use this practice to really meditate on what it is you want to accomplish this year.
Write down two goals – one for yourself, and one you want to help your daughter achieve. These need to be goals that you can commit to making changes for because you deeply desire whatever it is.
Dig deep and get clear on WHY these goals are so important to you. Write it down.
Write down how you would feel if you didn’t achieve these goals. For example, write about the PAIN you would experience if you weren’t successful. Make the emotion REAL and feel it! This will help you get even more motivated to make changes!
Now here’s where those 5 simple ACTIONS come in! Everyday during the month of January, before grabbing your phones, I want you to perform these daily actions as the first thing you do when you wake up. Ok, let’s get real….after giving birth, you’ll probably need to go to the bathroom first because we all know how our bladders work (or don’t work) post-partum! BUT AFTER THAT, go through this simple routine:
I want you to take three deep, cleansing breaths, then spend just a few minutes in prayer and meditation. Prayer is talking to your spiritual guide and meditation is listening for direction. For me, I believe in God, so I talk to Him. I like to start my prayers by thanking God for the blessings in my life. Then I ask for the guidance I need for that day.
If God isn’t your thing, just spend some time listening to the Universe. We are all connected by our atoms, by our electrons, by the energy that flows through and around us. So talk to that living connection and listen to what it has to say back.
Next, spend just a few minutes in meditation. Clear your mind. Focus on nothing but your breath and listening to God / the Universe / the Creator / your Higher Self. This daily action is vital to everything in life.
While you’re getting ready for the day (literally while you are in the bathroom), instead of stressing about your to-do list, I want you to focus on gratitude and the things you are thankful for, both big and small. When you practice this gratitude exercise, you need to put emotion behind what you say you are grateful for. Expressing gratitude with emotion is the secret to NOT allowing fear dictate your life, and it will significantly increase your QUALITY of life when you recognize all the GOOD instead of just focusing on the negative!
Before you leave the bathroom after getting ready, look in the mirror and have a moment of positive self talk. Tell yourself, in the present tense, who or what you are based on the goals you wrote down earlier as reality. Start the affirmation with “I am.” For example, if your personal goal is to have more patience, then your affirmations could be, “I am calm. I am in control. I react to any and everything in life with rational thinking versus emotion.” It’s super important to remember that these affirmations MUST be in the present tense and said with positive energy! Refrain from using any statements that start with “don’t,” “can’t” or “won’t” because that is NOT positive self talk, ladies!
After you have written down your goals, put them somewhere you can see daily. Like on your desk at work, a bulletin board in your office, or on your computer. I want you to read your goals every single day! It should be the first thing you do as soon as you get to work, before you start on anything else! Read your goals with positive emotion as if you have already achieved them, and think about the pleasure you’ll gain by accomplishing those goals.
That last part is SO crucial. You must FEEL what your life will be when your goals are a reality – LIVE in that space, in that life, and feel the immense gratitude of KNOWING those goals and aspirations ARE ALREADY a reality, you’re just waiting to catch up with them in time.
I know, I know…. If your goals aren’t health related, then you’re probably thinking, “Dawn, what does this have to do with anything?” But exercising for 15-30 minutes everyday will play a vital role in increasing your mental strength. There is a direct link between your body and your mind, so it’s a nonnegotiable that you HAVE TO move your body some way, somehow every single day. “But Dawn, I don’t have time!” Yes, you do, sis. We make time for things that are a priority to us. In fact, there are statistics out there that say 80% of what we do in our careers and in our lives is just noise (AKA a waste of time, AKA scrolling through social media), and 20% is actually producing results. So put down the phone, get off Instagram, and go for a walk – invite your daughter to go with you while you’re at it! If you want the mental strength to conquer what’s important to you, you have to move your body! You do not have time to NOT do this!
I promise that these 5 simple actions can (and will) produce MAJOR, goal-crushing results. I would never ask you to do something that I don’t do and haven’t proven to work myself.
