We seek leadership and guidance in different areas of our lives as we get older – our parents, grandparents, teachers, colleagues, coaches and more. As we approach Father’s Day, I can’t help but think about the influence my dad had on my own WELLth™ journey.

Like every parent, he probably impacted my life during times when he didn’t even know he was – but those moments when I was listening and learning shaped my view of money from an early age. Learned thoughts and mindsets can be changed, but without even realizing it we tend to simply carry many of our parents’ money habits through adulthood.

My dad leaned more towards the saver side of the aisle, and while I preferred to spend more than my dad did, his thoughts and opinions on saving – and money in general – played a huge part in my financial journey. You see, I started earning more and more money as my career in the financial industry progressed, but I was so wrapped up in doing what I thought others wanted me to do I got off-track. I wasn’t saving for the future, and I didn’t know where my paychecks were going from week to week.

Thankfully, my dad also never hesitated to tell me I could do anything I put my mind to. He influenced my self-worth positively, but as I got older, I let other people’s opinions overshadow his words and my own self-worth. Before I knew it, my self-worth and my net worth were both in the negatives, and I knew something had to change.

We must decide to either embrace our own worth or let the world decide for us. I decided I was done listening to the outside world. I started daily personal development and reworking my spending plan to reflect the things I treasured most, not what others wanted me to spend money on. Small steps daily eventually made significant improvements in my relationships, my confidence, and my mindset around money.

After 20 years as a private wealth advisor, I continue to implement these practices in my own life as I teach others to do the same. When we stop letting other people negatively influence our mindset, or our beliefs about ourselves and our money, we can start LIVING WELLthy™.
